Overview:
Anything east of Main Street as far as Boundary road is considered Vancouver’s East Side. Since Main Street stretches from downtown to the Fraser River, it passes through some fascinating neighborhoods that reflect the diversity of Vancouver’s population, especially from the pacific rim and Latin American countries. As more and more young people find Kitsilano price prohibitive, they’re flocking to Main Street and its more modest housing, making the area between 14th & 33rd street a happening place. The stretch between 25th and 31st Avenue is affectionately called Antique Row for is diverse collection of stores selling everything from quality and questionable second hand goods. It’s a bargain hunter’s paradise. Commercial Drive - The Drive - is known as Little Italy for its great Italian restaurants and ice-cream outlets while Little India, at 41st is a social, religious, commercial and cultural center for BC’s 80,000 south Asians form India, Pakistan, Figi, East Africa and Sri Lanka. The Punjabi Market is a must.
Some areas of the East Side, especially around Hastings Street, should be avoided. This is the poorest demographic in Canada and a haven for street people, prostitutes and unsavory characters.
